Nizonide 500mg Tablet contains Nitazoxanide, a broad-spectrum antiparasitic medicine. It works by interfering with an energy-producing process that certain parasites, including Giardia lamblia and Cryptosporidium parvum, need in order to survive, which allows the body’s own defences to clear the infection.

It is typically prescribed as a short, defined course rather than an ongoing medicine, once a doctor has diagnosed or strongly suspects a parasitic cause behind persistent diarrhoea.

  • Nitazoxanide 500 mg
  • Treats diarrhoea caused by Giardia lamblia infection
  • Treats diarrhoea caused by Cryptosporidium parvum infection
  • Helps resolve the stomach cramps and loose motions that come with these infections
  • Generally well tolerated, with a short, defined treatment course
  • Convenient dosing that is usually completed within a few days
  • Take one tablet with food, as your doctor has prescribed.
  • Swallow it whole with enough water; do not crush or chew it.
  • A typical course lasts around three days, or as your doctor directs based on your specific infection.
  • Complete the entire course even if you start to feel better sooner, since stopping early can allow the infection to persist or return.
  • When a doctor has diagnosed, or strongly suspects, a parasitic cause behind ongoing diarrhoea
  • After exposure to contaminated food or water, particularly during or after travel
  • When simple diarrhoea has not settled with basic home care and a doctor has recommended targeted treatment
  • Adults and children above 12 years with a doctor’s diagnosis and prescription
  • Younger children, only at the specific dose a paediatrician has prescribed
  • Anyone with a known allergy to Nitazoxanide
  • People who are HIV-positive or otherwise significantly immunocompromised, since the medicine is less reliable in this group and needs specialist input
  • Pregnant or breastfeeding women, unless specifically advised by a doctor
  • Possible side effects include nausea, abdominal discomfort, dizziness and, rarely, a skin rash or breathing difficulty that needs urgent medical attention.
  • Avoid alcohol during treatment, since it can blunt the body’s response to the infection.
  • Tell your doctor if you are taking blood thinners such as warfarin, heart medicines such as digoxin, or anti-seizure medicines such as phenytoin, since these can interact with Nitazoxanide.
  • Drink plenty of oral fluids if diarrhoea is significant, to avoid dehydration.
  • Seek medical care if you develop fever, blood in the stool, or signs of dehydration such as reduced urination, dizziness or a very dry mouth.
  • Store below 25°C in a dry place, and keep out of the reach of children.
