Rifagut 400mg Tablet contains Rifaximin, a broad-spectrum antibiotic from the rifamycin class that acts almost entirely within the gut, with minimal absorption into the bloodstream. This gut-selective action makes it useful for treating infectious/traveller’s diarrhoea caused by E. coli, managing irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhoea (IBS-D), and reducing recurrence of hepatic encephalopathy (a brain-function complication of advanced liver disease) all while keeping systemic side effects low compared with conventional antibiotics.

  • Rifaximin 400 mg (gut-selective, non-systemic antibiotic)
  • Excipients including colourants (e.g., Sunset Yellow FCF) and Titanium Dioxide
  • Treats traveller’s diarrhoea caused by non-invasive strains of E. coli
  • Reduces the frequency of hepatic encephalopathy episodes in chronic liver disease
  • Helps manage irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhoea (IBS-D) symptoms
  • Acts locally in the gut with minimal systemic absorption, limiting whole-body side effects
  • Take exactly as directed by your physician dose and duration vary by condition (e.g., short courses for traveller’s diarrhoea, longer maintenance courses for hepatic encephalopathy).
  • Can be taken with or without food.
  • Swallow the tablet whole with water; do not crush or chew it.
  • Complete the full prescribed course even if symptoms improve earlier — stopping early can reduce effectiveness.
  • For diagnosed traveller’s/infectious diarrhoea
  • As maintenance therapy to reduce hepatic encephalopathy recurrence in liver disease, as prescribed
  • For IBS with diarrhoea (IBS-D) as advised by a gastroenterologist
  • Adults with a doctor’s prescription for the above conditions
  • Patients with chronic liver disease on a hepatologist-guided maintenance plan
  • Anyone allergic to rifaximin or other rifamycin-class antibiotics (e.g., rifampicin)
  • Patients with severe liver disease, unless specifically approved and monitored by a doctor
  • Anyone with bloody diarrhoea, high fever, or suspected invasive bacterial infection these need urgent medical evaluation, as rifaximin is not appropriate for all diarrhoea types
  • Pregnant or breastfeeding women, unless advised by a doctor
  • Store in a cool, dry place away from sunlight and out of children’s reach.
  • Stay well hydrated, especially if you have diarrhoea use oral rehydration solution if advised.
  • Stop the medicine and consult your doctor immediately if diarrhoea worsens, turns bloody, or fever develops.
  • Inform your doctor of any liver condition or other medicines you take before starting Rifagut.
